Twenty -One

After a few weeks of Noah sending letters of apologies, flowers galore, poems, and gifts, Emily thought that this man was tenacious in winning her heart back. Yet, it was all for nothing on his part. She wanted nothing to do with him.

Clint informed her about his intentions and gave her all the more reason to hate Noah Hathaway, in addition to his failed proposal.

Out of the library window, Emily watched his carriage pull up and she groaned. “Daniel, I am not accepting any visitors today, Tell Mr. Hathaway to piss off in a nice way.”

Noah had proven time and time again that he lacked manners when he pushed away Daniel to get to Emily. “EMILY!” She stopped before she reached the top of the staircase.

“Come down here, Miss Emi, before I am forced to call the authorities on this intruder,” Daniel blurted out.

Noah retorted, “Oh, stifle it, old man.” This only angered her even more so.

Marching down the stairs, Emily reprimanded him. “How dare you speak to my butler in such an indignant manner, Mr. Hathaway? And how dare you barge into my father’s home?”

“We need to talk, please Miss Coates.” His pleading was met with ireful laughter.

“We’ve nothing to talk about. I will not marry a man who feels that he is entitled to treat me and those in my circle with such disrespect.” Noah squeezed her arm.

Noah gritted his teeth. “We need to take a ride and hash this out without an audience.”

“Very well. Daniel, will you be so kind to fetch my coat and the master-at-arms,” Emily ordered her butler politely, never removing the smirk from her face.

“Yes, my master-at-arms, Chief Alexander Peters. Per my father, he is to be with me at all times, and if you pull one thing, he will put you away,” Emily said matter-of-factly while slipping on her gloves.

“You’re joking?” Noah whispered.

Gritting her teeth, she responded, “Had you behaved more properly and not told Mr. Hawkins everything, it would not be necessary.” He shook his head until she furrowed her brow.

“Fine.” He gave Alexander a fake smile and shook his hand. “Don’t you have things you’d rather do, Chief Peters?”

“I haven’t a choice now, do I, Captain Hathaway?” Alexander’s Scottish brogue was more prominent when he was either annoyed or overjoyed—this time, clearly annoyed with having to play chaperone for Carlton’s daughter.
